2020 Already

I wish a Happy New Year to all.  Unfortunately 2020 has not had a good start for many people, with a great deal of tragedy.  I think we all have been devastated by the widespread destruction, and wish all of those affected a speedy resolution of their situations.  It was heartening to see the arts community rallying early to raise money to help.  I just hope the funds get through quickly to those who need them.

Since about November I have been preparing for an exhibition in Brisbane, opening on 28th April.  This will be my 50th anniversary year of being a full time professional artist.  It doesn’t seem that long, but when I look back I realise I have done a lot.

The subjects of all these new paintings is “Water”.  I have always loved painting the many facets of water, but I have never done an exhibition purely focused on it.  So far the paintings are coming along beautifully, with subjects for Italy and Australia, plus a few other ring-ins.  They will be on this web site much closer to the show.

My run-up to Christmas was quite successful.  I made an offer to our mailing list for the month before Christmas, reducing my prices on the paintings in my studio by the normal 40% gallery commission.  This is a good discount, and I received some good response, plus a couple of commissions also at the time.  I still have some paintings left that I am surprised are still unsold, and I am happy to keep considering any reasonable offers.

One of my commissions was a portrait, which I have not done for years.  When in the Army, 52 years ago, I did several portraits of people who were on course with me.  This particular commission was a second portrait, after those 52.   He wanted it to be done much like the first, in a similar style and colours, with a few drinks first. It was a challenge, but I think I nailed it quite well.  I used to love doing portraits, and this one reminded me of how satisfying it is, so I will be looking for more in the future.  Below are both these works.  The physique has changed, but the same character is still very much there.  Once a lowly 2nd Lieutenant, now a very successful businessman.

Warm regards,

Rick

New Year - New Sculptures

15/3/2019

The new year is progressing quickly.  Des and I have been back to Italy in January and February to check on our apartment, and to refresh the wonderful sensations of being in Italy. Now it is back to work.

At the moment I have my last 3 "Trusting" bronze sculptures being cast at Phillip Piperides Foundry here in Brisbane. One is definitely sold, one is being considered, so only the last of the edition of 10 is available. Image below.

I also have 3 new bronzes in production. One is another version of Trusting - "Trusting Two" - this time with 2 figures.  One is a different version of my previous "Juggler", and the other will be called "Reading".  These should be ready in about a month.

I love the process of making sculptures, and I have more ideas in the pipeline.  I will be posting them as they are completed.

Warm regards,

Rick

End Of Year - Exhibition Approaching

29/10/2018

I can’t believe it has been over a year since my last posting here.  My intention was to be fairly regular with my news.  My only excuse is that this last year has seen quite a bit of upheaval and change.

As planned, we sold our Maleny property.  We moved to a three bedroom apartment in Teneriffe, by the Brisbane River.  This was somewhat of a test, to see if we could manage in an apartment. I found I couldn’t function well in a very restricted studio space, so after six months we moved again.  We are now in a house in Auchenflower, with ample room, and I am painting well.

This disruption has not been very conducive to the free flow of my painting.  My paintings evolve best when I can establish a certain creative rhythm.  When I am in that environment everything flows nicely, however, unwanted interruptions can play havoc with it.

In this past year, despite the mess, I have experienced some intermittent periods of good painting times, so I have managed to produce some very satisfying pieces, but it has not been the continuity and easy flow that I usually look for.

Those following my progress will notice that lately I have held some different types of exhibitions.  An auction, which is always fraught with danger, then a one weekend exhibition in Brisbane, and a smaller feature exhibition at Art On Cairncross in Maleny.  These have occurred as the opportunity presented, and have had to fit in with our erratic movements.  Fortunately all managed to produce adequate sales, and also some commissions, so although it has been a strange year, we have still managed to keep moving ahead.

One of our interruptions was a trip back to Italy in July. This of course is not really an interruption, and is always a delight, re-energising my love of those subjects.  I had planned to make my end of year exhibition at Graydon Gallery a mixture of different subjects, heading in some new directions, but our return to Italy resulted in finding some lovely new material, so the show now is basically all Italian.  Italy was in mid summer, with everything in full vibrant colour, and that has influenced these current paintings.

My exhibition begins on 27 November at Graydon Gallery, 29 Merthyr Rd., New Farm, Brisbane,  You are most welcome to join us for drinks on Friday 30 November, 6 to 8 pm, to launch the show.  If you are not on our mailing list and would like an invitation, please register on our MAILING LIST page.

One month out from the exhibition I still have finishing off to do.  I have not yet posted these exhibition paintings on the site, but this is how my studio looks at the moment.

I hope to see you at the exhibition.

Rick

AUCTION OF PAINTINGS & SCULPTURES

10/8/2017

I have a great belief that we should listen to our internal guidance, and I have tried to live my life doing just that.

For most of this year Desley and I have had the feeling that we need to change our situation, and simplify quite drastically.  We feel it is time for a renewal, new directions, new work.  Our recent trip back to Italy has given us the time for reflection, and strangely, this year has unfolded in such a way that has made certain decisions very appropriate.

I am also a great believer in making space to allow new things to enter.  I am not about to retire, and have some interesting ideas for new paintings and sculptures, so I feel the need to make that new space available.
A couple of times this year I have made special offers, to stimulate sales of my work, with quite good success.  However, we are going to do more.

Our Maleny house, studio and gallery are now on the market.
https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-qld-maleny-126032574

We are not sure exactly where we are going to from here, but we have great faith that the next step will present itself to us at the appropriate time.  Of course, we still have our place in Italy where we can hang out for a while if needed.

I do not want to put my paintings and sculptures into storage, so I am offering those that have not sold beforehand at an Auction at Graydon Gallery in New Farm on 25th August.

The paintings will be on exhibition for only 4 days, from Tuesday 22nd August to Friday 25th August.  On the Thursday night before the Auction we will keep the gallery open until 8pm.

The Auction will start at 6pm on Friday 25th August, with bidder registration from 6 to 7, and the Auction beginning at 7pm.

You are most welcome to attend. We hope to see many people there. It should be fun.

Warm regards,

Rick

Weekend Opening

30/6/2017

Desley and I have just returned from a delightful month in Italy. We stayed in our Cevoli apartment some of the time, but the main purpose for the trip was to collect material from the Amalfi Coast for a future exhibition. We also managed visits to Venice and The Cinque Terre. It was great to be back in Italy.

While there I saw some wonderful exhibitions, and have come back inspired to clear some space in my studio, and launch into working on new work, including new sculptures.

I still have some lovely paintings, sketches and sculptures on hand in our Maleny Studio/Gallery, so we have decided to open the gallery again for this weekend.

Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd July
10am to 5pm

26 Thynne Court, Maleny

All are very welcome. We hope to see you in Maleny this weekend.

Warmest regards,

Rick

CHANGES

11/5/2017

THE STUDIO / GALLERY

We have decided to make a few changes to the way we operate.  We are discontinuing our regular Sunday opening of our Maleny Studio / Gallery.  We will still be happy to open at any time if you would like to visit, but having said that, we will not be available at all for the next six weeks, as we will be in Italy.

PAINTINGS

I have deliberately not painted any new works since last November, and the break has been very refreshing. Now we are having a look at Italy again, with the idea of introducing some refreshing changes into my work.

On this trip I am looking in depth at the Amalfi Coast. I have have been there several times, but have only painted a few works from there, so I hope to return with some new work and ideas.

I have also made some changes to a painting I had entered in the Tattersalls Art Prize a couple of years ago. From time to time I will re-visit a painting and decide to make some changes. On reflection, I thought "A Country House" was a bit too green, and looked somewhat depressing, so it has now become less green, a little brighter, and has attracted a couple of figures.  I think now it is much better.

Check out the details.

SCULPTURES

I have also begun to have some of my sculptures cast here in Australia. "Trusting" has just been cast at Phillip Piperides Foundry in Brisbane, and they have done a beautiful job. "Trusting" has been one of my most popular pieces, and this casting has been bought by very happy clients in Melbourne.  I am now in the process of having another 2 more cast, and they will be available in late June.

Check out the details

Warm regards,
Rick

SUNDAY GALLERY OPENINGS

24/1/2017

I wish everyone a very Happy New Year, and hope 2017 is good for everyone.  Last year was quite unsettled for us, with quite a few planned activities needing to be postponed until this year.

We have decided to open our Maleny Studio Gallery on a more regular basis, so we now will be open every Sunday from 10am to 5pm.  If for some reason we are not able to open on a particular Sunday we will advise the fact on our STUDIO / GALLERY page here.

As always, if you are planning a visit to the Hinterland Hills, we are happy to open the gallery at any other time, but we ask you to call us first to make sure we are here.

I have begun this year by delving back into my old sketchbooks, and I have found several ideas I had previously considered, but never taken to any conclusion.  With the benefit of more years of experience I can see great potential in exploring them further.  I am now doing the preparation needed to bring some of these ideas into being, so hopefully in the not too distant future I will have some interesting new works to show.

In the meantime most of the current work that is on the web site her can be viewed in our Maleny Gallery, and everyone is welcome.

Brisbane Exhibition

The last couple of months have been extremely busy. Following the opening of my Sydney exhibition, Desley and I made a lightning visit to Italy, largely to carry out some maintenance on our property there, to get it ready for next year's holiday rental guests. It was a very brief visit, but it was wonderful to catch up with our Italian friends again, and renew those lovely Italian sensations.

It is not my usual practice to have exhibitions so close together, but the Sydney show was scheduled much later than usual, and I knew these two shows would be more of a traveling exhibition. I am really happy with the way the paintings look, especially my most recent larger works. I am now putting the finishing touches to the final few paintings, to add to this exhibition and replace some sold pieces.

We open at Graydon Gallery, 29 Merthyr Road, New Farm, Brisbane on Tuesday 29th November, running until Sunday 11th December. Our gallery hours are 11am to 5pm daily, but we are happy to be flexible. Please phone me on 0488 594 616 if other viewing times are required.

If you have not yet subscribed to our Email Mailing List, I invite you to follow this link to our MAILING LIST page and register your details, to receive information of future exhibitions and events.

You are most welcome to join us for our opening drinks on Tuesday 29th November from 6 to 8pm.

Hope to see you in Brisbane.

My Sydney exhibition is now on at Maunsell Wickes Gallery,19 Glenmore Rd., Paddington, and runs until 26 October. Everyone is welcome to join us. The full exhibition can be viewed on the gallery web site: www.maunsellwickes.com

Exhibitions, Commissions, Competitions & Travel

8/9/2016

This year has been quite a topsy turvy one for us. Most things we had planned to do had to be deferred for various reasons, but now we are catching up. Our postponed Italian trip is back on again in October, although in a much shortened form.

A commission trip to Port Hedland, and a painting workshop I was to hold in Quilpie, also have both been put off until next year.

My painting rhythm has been quite disrupted this year, but for some time now I have been diligently back at my easel, working on some larger paintings for my up-coming Sydney exhibition. I have just completed one of the largest paintings I have done for some time. "Fresco Lady" (168 x 122 cm) is a subject I have had in my thoughts for many years. It has a companion piece that I did quite a few years ago, and now it is very satisfying to see this one finally finished.

MALENY GALLERY OPENING - 17 & 18 SEPTEMBER - 10AM - 6PM BOTH DAYS

I have also been working on some smaller Italian pieces, not necessarily for the Sydney Show, so we have decided to open our Maleny Studio / Gallery for this one weekend.

If you fancy a nice drive to the Maleny Hills, the weather and the landscape here at the moment is beautiful.
All are most welcome.

I still have a passion for my Italian subjects. In Italy there is an endless supply of beautiful patinered walls and doors and windows, not to mention the people, and I get great joy out of painting them all.  The series continues.

ART PRIZES

For years I have not entered art competitions, mainly because I had not been a resident here in Australia, but this year I have had paintings accepted in the Paddington Art in Sydney, Tattersalls prize in Brisbane, and the Local Artist Local Content Prize on the Sunshine Coast.

I thought it would be a good idea to send the Sydney prize a little bit of Maleny.
