San Gimignano was our base in Italy from 1991 until we bought our house in Soiana in 1999. It is the most famous of the Tuscan Hill towns, and rightly so. Even though it gets very busy in the tourist season, we still always find it to be a very intriguing place. We have had the privilege of being shown parts of San Gimignano that the tourists never see. Our place is only about an hour's drive away, so we go there often.
The town itself presents a challenge to paint, as it is mainly stone, and monochromatic, and relies on the ever changing patterns of sunlight and shadow to give it form and dimension. This small street leads down from the Rocca, the old fort at the top of the town, with two of San Gimignano's famous towers in the background.
