Two Gondolas - Venice
Oil on board - 50 x 40 cm (Framed size: 64 x 54 x 3.5 cm) - $6,250
I have done many paintings of Venice over the last 34 years of visits there, but I have deliberately avoided painting too many subjects with gondolas, mainly because I think they are such obvious tourist symbols of the Venetian experience. I tend rather to be drawn to the lovely patinas of the walls and doorways, and of course their reflections.
However, gondolas are quite fascinating and historic craft. With their particular asymmetrical design, and highly reflective black hulls, they are not like usual boats, and are quite a challenge to paint. The difficulty is to depict their unique design sitting naturally in the water, as they do so beautifully in Venice. I think this painting succeeds nicely.
