SCULPTURES

My sculptures are a departure from my paintings. I want to express some different and playful ideas in a completely different medium. They fall into two categories, my one winged angels, and some light comment of our human condition.

ONE WINGED ANGELS

These spring from an article I read early in my encounter with Italy. The Baci chocolate company was having a competition to find new sayings for the chocolate wrappers. The judge was Neopolitan writer, Luciano De Crescenzo. In true Italian style, he entered his own saying, which was:

“Siamo angeli con un’ala soltanto: e possiamo volare solo restando abbracciati” which translates as:
“We are angels with only one wing: we are able to fly only when we are embracing”

This really caught my imagination, and it sparked a series of sculptures, one in marble, but mostly in bronze, of embracing figures with only one wing.

THE HUMAN CONDITION

These are a series of sculptures in bronze taking a lighthearted look at us humans. The sculptures on poles are meant to sway a little, as life is a bit unstable. The climbing pieces allude to trust and aspirations, but the true interpretation of these pieces is up to the viewer.

THE FOUNDRIES

My original bronzes were all fabricated at Fonderia d’Arte Massimo Del Chiaro in Pietrasanta, Italy.  www.delchiaro.com  The foundry, about an hour from our home in Italy, is a truly inspiring place. It is frequented by some prominent sculptors from all over the world, and I dearly miss my involvement there.

However, I am continuing to produce more sculptures here in Australia, working with a wonderful Australian sculptor, Phillip Piperides, at his Perides Foundry in Brisbane. http://www.peridesartfoundry.com.au
