I saw this girl looking out to sea in Tropea, Calabria. I have wanted to paint this subject for a long time, as I really like the simplicity of the railing. Tropea is built on a high cliff above the beach. This railing is at the ocean end of a small piazza, and beyond it is a shear drop to sudden death.
Quite often in situations I find an obscure element, such as this railing, that captures my attention, and that really becomes the reason for that particular subject. It could be a set of colours, or a silhouette through a window, or a lovely railing, but each presents a special magic that works its way into my paintings.
