Borgo Petrognano
Oil on board - 81 x 61 cm (Framed size 96 x 76 x 3.5 cm) - $9,500
A borgo in Italy is a particular group of buildings, not quite a town, but sometimes dating back to the middle ages and renaissance. They are quite often fascinating places, and this one, Borgo Petrognano, north of San Gimignano, is no exception. I have done several paintings in this location, and I usually travel there each time I return to Italy. A particular challenge is the painting of olive trees. They are a beautiful statement in the Italian countryside, but their foliage is made up of an array of very subtle colours that defy easy interpretation.
