Small Door - San Gimignano

Oil on board - 92 x 92 cm - $11,000
San Gimignano is the most important of all the Tuscan hill towns. Quite beautiful and full of mystery, it was our base for eight years from our first visit in 1991 until we bought our own property. This door is my favourite in the town and I have painted it several times over the years. It is so small, but the large lintel on top speaks of great power. It is about a thousand years old, and is the entrance at the base of one of the oldest towers in the town. I find the lovely abstract quality of the juxtaposition of the different coloured elements very satisfying.
