I have had a life long fascination with doorways, and I have been painting them throughout my career. I love the surface patinas that the passage of time creates, and the marks left by the countless people who entered and exited. This doorway in Sicily has all the characteristics that I love in these types of subjects. I love the challenge of paintings that have a very shallow relief, so I am always drawn back to Italy, as I find an endless supply of subjects such as these.
